Microsoft Viva Learning premium: Sort search results by ratings and views

Viva Learning premium now allows users to sort search results by relevance, ratings, or views. This feature is available on various Viva Learning pages within Microsoft Teams and the web, and will roll out in early September 2024. No admin action is required for this update.

Microsoft Viva Learning search now supports sorting of search results. Users can sort search results by relevance, by the number of views in descending order, or by the ratings in descending order. This feature helps users find the most relevant and popular learning content. This feature is a premium capability and available only to tenants with a premium Viva Learning license. This message applies to Viva Learning in Microsoft Teams for the Windows desktop, Teams on the web, and Viva Learning Webapp on the web.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 160731.

When this will happen:

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out early September 2024 and expect to complete by early September 2024.

How this will affect your organization:

Before this rollout: All search results are sorted by Relevance and no Sort options exist.

After this rollout: By default, when a user searches in the Viva Learning Home page or the My Learning page, results are sorted by Relevance. Users can modify the results order by using the Sort option in the top right of the Viva Learning search results pane. Users can choose from these sort options for search results:

  • Relevance: Sorts by provider boosting, results matching with the user query, and social signals
  • Highest rating: Sorts by average rating of the content
  • Most viewed: Sorts by total views of the content.

The Sort option chosen by a user persists across multiple queries in a single search session, but the default option Relevance will reappear when the user starts a new search session. Users can sort by one parameter at a time.

The Sort option is available in all search windows in Viva Learning. The pages in Viva Learning that will show the Sort option are:

  • Search engine result page
  • Catalog search windows for:
    • a Learning path
    • a Learning collection
    • Academy curation
    • Permissions
    • a Feature set
    • a Viva Learning tab in Microsoft Teams chats and group chats

This feature is on by default with no admin toggles to adjust.

What you need to do to prepare:

This rollout will happen automatically by the specified date with no admin action required before the rollout. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation.
