Control the availability of Copilot in Viva Goals using Viva Feature Access Management starting in July 2024

Starting July 2024, Copilot in Viva Goals will be managed via Viva Feature Access Management (VFAM). Admins can control its availability for specific groups or entire tenants. Existing settings will be automatically transferred to VFAM without needing reconfiguration. Rollout begins mid-July and completes by late August 2024.

Global admins and Viva Goals admins can control the availability of Microsoft Copilot in Viva Goals either for specific groups or entire tenants using Viva Feature Access Management (VFAM). The current control in the Viva Goals admin portal for enabling or disabling Viva Goals Copilot will be deprecated, and admins can use VFAM for the same purpose instead. All existing configurations for enabling or disabling Viva Goals Copilot will be automatically moved to VFAM and do not need to be reconfigured. For detailed information about controlling access using VFAM, see Microsoft Viva – Feature access management.

When this will happen:

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out mid-July 2024 and expect to complete late August 2024.

How this will affect your organization:

Admins can control the availability of Viva Goals Copilot either for selected users/groups or for an entire tenant using VFAM.

The current control present in the Viva Goals admin portal for users to enable or disable Viva Goals copilot will be deprecated.

All existing configurations set for enabling or disabling Viva Goals Copilot will be automatically moved to VFAM and will work seamlessly without the admins having to reconfigure it using VFAM.

How can admins use VFAM?

Global admins and Viva Goals admins can use VFAM via PowerShell cmdlets or Microsoft 365 admin center. Admins can turn Viva Goals Copilot ON or OFF for everyone or for specific users or groups by creating tenant or group level access policies.

For example, if an admin chooses to disable Copilot only for users in Germany, they can use VFAM in the following ways:

  • Create a group access policy in VFAM (using PowerShell cmdlets).
  • Assign the Microsoft 365 group that contains all Germany users to the group policy.
  • Set the group policy to OFF (disabled).

Admins can also turn Viva Goals Copilot ON and OFF from the Microsoft 365 admin center. More details can be found here: Manage access to Copilot in Viva.

What you need to do to prepare:

What happens to the Viva Goal Copilot settings configured from the Viva Goals admin portal?

  • The current control present in the Viva Goals admin portal for users to enable or disable Viva Goals Copilot will be deprecated with this updated feature.
  • All existing configurations set for enabling or disabling Viva Goals Copilot will be automatically moved to VFAM and will work seamlessly without the admins having to reconfigure it using VFAM. For example, if you have enabled Viva Goals Copilot only for a specific group of users such as All US employees group, you will find that a custom policy is created on VFAM to allow access only for All US employees group
  • For any new changes required, admins can configure them using VFAM.

If you wish to leave your current Viva Goals Copilot settings unchanged, no action is needed.

If you want to change your existing Viva Goals Copilot settings to enable Viva Goals Copilot for all or for certain groups of users, admins can create a tenant or group policy as required on VFAM.
