Introducing Windows 11 checkpoint cumulative updates

In late 2024, checkpoint cumulative updates will be introduced for devices running Windows 11, version 24H2 or later and Windows Server 2025. This means that updating your Windows devices will involve smaller update files, resulting in a quicker and more efficient update experience. You will begin to receive checkpoint cumulative updates automatically, with no action required from you. Today, you can preview this experience in Windows Insider’s Preview Build 26120.1252 (Dev Channel). Read more in Introducing Windows 11 checkpoint cumulative updates

When will this happen:
This optimization will become available in the second half of 2024. The preview of this experience is available today in Windows Insider’s Preview Build 26120.1252 (Dev Channel).

How this will affect your organization:
This optimization will allow you to get features and security enhancements via the latest cumulative update through smaller, incremental differentials containing only the changes since the previous checkpoint cumulative update. This means that you can save time, bandwidth, and hard drive space. As Microsoft periodically releases cumulative updates as checkpoints, the subsequent updates will consist of:
  • The update package files associated with the checkpoints
  • New update package files that contain incremental binary differentials against the version of binaries in the last checkpoint

What you need to do to prepare:
You will need to download the Windows 11, version 24H2 update when it becomes available in late 2024. It will be available as a traditional feature update to all devices. After this, checkpoint cumulative updates will automatically become part of your usual update experience, with no action required from you. Learn more from the resources below.
