Microsoft Sustainability Manager: Streamline ESG data collection with approvals
Data collection lets sustainability practitioners efficiently get information from multiple stakeholders across the organization. By creating data plans or requests and monitoring their progress, this capability ensures smooth integration of collected data into Microsoft Sustainability Manager. This approach improves data accuracy, reduces manual tasks, and increases overall efficiency in ESG reporting.

Sustainability practitioners often face challenges when collecting ESG data from diverse sources, including databases and physical documents. Structured data typically integrates through data connectors, but unstructured data often requires manual entry, which is common in many organizations. Coordinating data collection among many employees in large companies can be challenging, especially if employees don’t know the purpose or deadlines. This manual process is inefficient and time consuming, highlighting the need for automated data collection workflows.
The data collection feature in Microsoft Sustainability Manager helps practitioners efficiently gather data from various responsible parties within the organization. Practitioners create data plans or requests and track their status until the data integrates into Microsoft Sustainability Manager. Recent enhancements, like a multi-level approval mechanism, improve data quality and accuracy. Practitioners can collect social, governance, and environmental data at different granularities.
These enhancements are automatically available in both Essentials and Premium SKUs. Users can access the feature from the left navigation by selecting the Data Collection section. Practitioners can add data owners in the Data Owners tab, create data collection requests in the Requests tab, orchestrate plans in the Plans tab, and manage multi-level approvals in the Approvals section.
