Microsoft Purview | Data Lifecycle Management – New cmdlet to remove retention holds from inactive mailboxes

Microsoft Purview introduces new opt-in cmdlet parameters to remove retention holds from inactive mailboxes, enabling permanent deletion while respecting compliance. The ExcludeFromAllHolds parameter removes most holds except eDiscovery and litigation holds, and RemoveComplianceTagHold targets only Compliance Tag holds. Rollout begins December 2025.

Coming soon: IT admins will be able to customize recording and transcription notifications in Teams

Starting January 2026, IT admins can customize Teams recording and transcription notification messages and privacy links per meeting policy, aligning consent language with organizational needs. Custom messages have a 200-character limit, support explicit and implicit consent, and apply only when enabled. Default messages remain if no custom text is set.

Microsoft 365 Copilot declarative agents will upgrade to the GPT-5.1 model with an auto architecture by mid-January 2026. Microsoft Teams: Enhancing update efficiency through peer-to-peer (P2P) download

Microsoft Teams will use peer-to-peer update distribution via Delivery Optimization starting December 2025, enabling devices on the same network to share update files. This reduces CDN bandwidth use, speeds updates, and saves up to 30% bandwidth. No admin action is needed, but network policies should allow Delivery Optimization.

Latest on Windows quality updates out of the box – now disabled by default

Starting with the January 2026 security update, the AllowOOBEUpdates CSP policy will be available and disabled by default. It shows up as a new setting on the Windows Autopilot Enrollment Status Page (ESP). This policy allows you to install the latest Windows quality updates during the out-of-box experience (OOBE) on eligible devices. Devices must be Microsoft Entra joined or Microsoft Entra hybrid joined and running Windows 11, version 22H2 or later. The original announcement and documentation are updated to reflect this change and to clarify device targeting.

IP address changes in Defender for Identity v2.x sensor communication

Microsoft Defender for Identity v2.x sensors will start using new IP addresses from the AzureAdvancedThreatProtection service tag range beginning mid-December 2025. Organizations restricting outbound IPs must update firewall rules to allow this range to avoid connectivity loss; no action is needed if the full range is already allowed.

Express voice enrollment makes registering your voice in Teams fast and easy. Your profile enables features like voice isolation, speaker recognition, identification in a meeting room and transcripts, and enhanced meeting recaps and insights from Microsoft 365 Copilot. If you haven’t enrolled, you’ll get an in-product prompt to opt-in and enroll your voice profile simply by speaking in a meeting. Admins can enable or disable this feature for their organization.
