Changes to Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) following June 2023 updates for Windows 11

Beginning with updates released on June 27, 2023 for Windows 11, version 22H2, Microsoft has changed how it updates PCs that run the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). WinRE will be updated using the monthly cumulative update. This change only applies to PCs running Windows 11, version 22H2, which get updates from Windows Update (WU) and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

For complete details, including guidance on handling issues, see KB5028997: Instructions to manually resize your partition to install the WinRE update.
When will this happen:
This change starts on June 27, 2023, for devices running Windows 11, version 22H2.
How this will affect your organization:
Some PCs might not have a recovery partition that is large enough to complete the update. This may result in issues updating WinRE, such as encountering the error message “Windows Recovery Environment servicing failed”. It might be necessary to manually resize the recovery partition in order to resolve this.
What you need to do to prepare:
A phased deployment may be helpful for organizations with Windows 11 devices, which are being updated with the June 27, 2023 (or later) update. This deployment method can help provide an initial understanding of the need to adjust device partitions across several managed devices.
