Microsoft Stream Migration Tool: Partial Migration and Orphan Video Support

The Stream migration tool helps IT admins migrate video content from Stream (Classic) to Stream (on SharePoint). We are releasing two features to the tool soon:

  • Partial migration support will allow you to select only the content you want to migrate.  
  • Orphan video support will let you migrate videos that have no assigned owner in Stream (Classic). A video can have no owner if the creator/uploader of the video is no longer with your organization.

When this will happen:

These features will become available for some customers on June 1, 2023 and will roll out to all customers by late June 2023. 

How this will affect your organization:

Partial migration: To migrate selected content, you must first scan all content in your Stream (Classic) tenant and then apply filters to choose the videos you want to migrate. You will be able to filter by publish date, last viewed date, number of views and content type (‘Teams meeting Recording’, ‘Live event’ and ‘Video on demand’). Migrating selected content, rather than all content, will save you time during migration process and will use less OneDrive and SharePoint storage.

Admins can access the migration tool by following these steps: 

  1. Sign into the Stream Admin Center. 
  2. Navigate to Stream Migration > Migration tool. 

Orphan videos: To migrate orphan videos you will first need to access them in a new container type labeled ‘Orphan Videos‘. To locate ‘Orphan Videos‘ containers, go to the migration tool, and select: ‘Add container’ -> ‘Look for new containers‘, then use the container type filter and select ‘Orphan Videos.’ You can then migrate these as you would any other container type.

Note: If your organization has more than 40,000 containers, you will need to add containers manually. 

As announced in January, Stream (Classic) will be retired on Feb 15, 2024, for all customers, except GCC customers. The successor service, Stream (on SharePoint), is currently available for all customers to use. For many organizations, the first step to begin migration is to decide which content to migrate and where to store this content in Stream (on SharePoint). We recommend that you begin planning your migration now.

The Stream migration tool has been designed to help admins move content from Stream (Classic) to Stream (on SharePoint). Microsoft will not migrate any content on your behalf. See the Stream retirement timeline for critical dates.  

Note: This message center post does not apply to Government Commercial Cloud (GCC) customers. The migration tool is not yet available for GCC customers, and we have not yet set a retirement date for the GCC instance of Stream (Classic). Until those dates are announced, GCC customers can continue to use Stream (Classic) without interruption. When these dates are announced GCC customers will receive both access to the migration tool and one-year advance notice of retirement.
