Microsoft Syntex Taxonomy Tagger

Microsoft Syntex gives you the ability to automatically tag documents that reside on SharePoint libraries with terms configured in Taxonomy store using AI. These keywords are stored in a managed metadata (a.k.a Taxonomy) column on the item, making the documents easier to search, sort, filter, and manage.

Syntex Taxonomy Tagger is available on a pay-as-you-go basis and is not included in the Syntex seat license. Learn More

When this will happen:

  • Targeted Release: Rollout is expected to start in late August 2023 and complete by early September 2023.
  • Standard Release: Rollout is expected to start in early September 2023 and complete by mid-September 2023.

How this will affect your organization:

To activate Taxonomy Tagger, admins must first set up Syntex Billing by going to Set Up -> Files and Content -> Set up Syntex in the Microsoft Admin center. After billing is set up, admins can enable Taxonomy Tagger in all SharePoint libraries in the tenant, for libraries in selected sites or for no libraries. Taxonomy Tagger is not available in OneDrive for Business at this time.

Once the admin allows, Taxonomy Tagger will not start working until end users go to relevant SharePoint libraries and enable Taxonomy tagging. Ways to enable taxonomy tagging at a library level:

Option 1: Using existing Taxonomy (a.k.a Managed Metadata) column

If the Taxonomy column already exists in your library, then you can simply enable Taxonomy Tagging by turning on the toggle in the Edit Column settings for the column.

Once enabled, any new documents uploaded / existing documents edited in the library will be processed to tag with the configured term set.

Option 2: Creating new Taxonomy (a.k.a Managed Metadata) column

Alternatively, you can go to any SharePoint document library and then select Add Column > Managed metadata option and in the column settings panel, you can turn on the toggle to enable Taxonomy Tagging.

Once enabled, any new documents uploaded / existing documents edited in the library will be processed to tag with the configured term set
