Product-wide disablement of email to private message feature in Viva Engage (Yammer)

After 13th November 2023, Viva Engage (Yammer) will no longer support the creation of private messages through email. It will still be possible for users to post messages to communities through email.

Today, users can create private messages by emailing user alias+network name@yammer.com. This flow will soon stop working. Users must instead go to the Engage app or browser experience to create private messages.

If users attempt to create a private message by sending an email after the feature is disabled, they’ll receive an email notification explaining that email creation of private messages is no longer available. Private messages continue to generate email notifications; users will still be able to reply and react to private messages in Outlook.

When will this happen

All networks will find that the email to private message feature stops working at the same time after November 13, 2023.

How this will affect your organization

We expect minimal impact from this change. If your organization makes heavy use of private messages, only users that create private message threads from email will be impacted by this change.

This change does not impact communities. Users will continue to be able to start community threads using the community email address.

What you can do to prepare

There is no action for admins beyond reviewing any internal help or guidance you have may have created for end users. If you are using this feature as part of a custom integration to connect an application with Viva Engage, you will need to investigate alternatives.
