Self-service trial experience available for Microsoft Purview

Beginning in mid-October, users in your organization will be able to initiate a self-service trial of Microsoft Purview using their Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) credentials. Administrators have the option to opt their organization out of this trial offering, however if your organization allows it you will have full visibility and control.

With this update, end users will be able to start a trial and generate signals on utilization for admins to identify users that would benefit from a Microsoft Purview license. Enabling this trial will not require your users to input payment information.

When this will happen:

Standard Release (if applicable): We will begin rolling out mid-October 2023 and expect to complete by mid-November 2023.

How this will affect your organization:

Users will be able to initiate a Microsoft Purview trial by going to Purview.microsoft.com and logging in with tier enterprise AAD credentials. Self-service trial licenses will be a part of your Microsoft organizational tenant, and you will be able to manage these licenses like other Microsoft subscriptions. You will be able to cancel trial licenses at any time.

You will also fully control whether trials are converted to paid subscriptions. Users won’t need to input payment information when signing up. If a user would like to convert to a paid license, they must work with you directly to do so as there is no auto-renew functionality for these trials.

If a user isn’t upgraded to a paid subscription, they can continue to experience the capabilities offered in the free version of Microsoft Purview until explicitly canceled by a tenant administrator.

Microsoft Purview is a family of data governance, risk, and compliance solutions that can help your organization govern, protect, and manage your entire data estate. Microsoft Purview solutions provide integrated coverage and help address the recent increases in remote user connectivity, the fragmentation of data across organizations, and the blurring of traditional IT management roles. You can learn more here.

What you can do to prepare:

Global or billing admins can use the same self-service purchase controls to disable self-service trials while making use of subscription management capabilities to oversee and manage trial licenses on the Your Products page in the Billing section of Microsoft 365 admin center.
