Microsoft Defender for Identity alerts transitioning to XDR-based detection platform

Microsoft Defender for Identity classic alerts will transition to the XDR detection platform starting mid-December 2025, improving detection accuracy. Admins must update workflows, use new Detector IDs, and reconfigure alert exclusions with XDR Alert Tuning rules. The rollout completes by early January 2026.

New update to address issue affecting organizations with Windows 10 devices enrolled on Extended Security Updates (ESU)

Microsoft has identified an issue where some Windows 10, version 22H2 devices enrolled in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for commercial customers might fail to install the November 2025 security update (KB5068781) with error 0x800f0922 (CBS_E_INSTALLERS_FAILED). This issue is isolated to devices whose Windows OS licenses were activated via Windows subscription activation through the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Excel: Python in Excel

Python in Excel allows you to bring the capabilities of Python directly into the Excel grid. As a part of this feature, users will be able to add Python formulas directly into their workbooks without any installation required. These Python formulas will be run by Excel in a secure container on the Microsoft Cloud with enterprise-level security as a compliant Microsoft 365 connected experience.

Outlook: Enriching profile cards with custom, organization-specific properties

Customers can now customize their M365 profile cards by adding custom properties unique to their organization. These properties can be sourced from external systems like HR platforms, enriching user profiles with relevant organizational details. Tenant admins can configure these properties with a display name and icon, which will appear in the Contact Information section of the profile cards.

Microsoft Teams: Miracast support for Teams Rooms on Windows (Teams Rooms Pro only)

Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows (Pro only) will support Miracast for wireless content sharing starting January 2026. The feature is off by default and can be enabled by admins via the IT portal. Compatible devices and Miracast support on laptops are required. No user impact unless enabled.

SharePoint branding governance via PowerShell

Tenant admins will soon manage SharePoint site branding centrally via PowerShell, enabling enforcement of enterprise themes, disabling custom branding per site, auditing changes, and applying themes during site creation. Theme management will centralize in the primary geo, with rollout from late 2025 to early 2026.

Microsoft SharePoint: Update to custom scripting governance in App Catalog site  Action required by Jan 13, 2026

Starting mid-January 2026, custom scripting will be disabled by default on the tenant-wide SharePoint App Catalog site to enhance security. App operations remain unaffected, but new custom script changes will be blocked. Admins can temporarily opt out using PowerShell commands and should inform site owners accordingly.
