Microsoft 365: SMTP onboarding to App Role Based Access Control

We’re simplifying how organizations grant applications permission to send email on behalf of mailboxes. Today, customers must manually assign permissions to each individual mailbox using PowerShell, which is time-consuming and inefficient. With this new capability, admins can assign the SMTP.SendAsApp role to an app through App Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), enabling group-based or scoped access to mailboxes. This eliminates the need for per-mailbox configuration and streamlines onboarding for SMTP clients using OAuth. It’s a scalable, secure, and modern approach to managing mailbox access for applications.

Immersive Search

After completing a search in Outlook, a user will see a Copilot entry point that will take them to an LLM generated summary of their search query (emails, Teams messages and documents) within their Copilot side pane. They will be able to interact further with Copilot to dig deeper into these results and take action items accordingly.

Microsoft Viva: Unread News Notifications in Connections

Users will receive a weekly notification in the Connections apps in Microsoft Teams on mobile and desktop linking them to relevant SharePoint news that they might have missed in the preceding week. This unread news will be available in the “News” tab in the Connections app under the “unread” pill.

Microsoft Exchange Online | Releasing Multi-Geo In-Region Routing

Microsoft Exchange Online is introducing Multi-Geo In-Region Routing (IRR) to help organizations meet regional data residency requirements by routing inbound emails to user-specific geo-regions. Public preview starts in August 2025, with general availability in October 2025. IRR is disabled by default and may require policy adjustments for compliance.

Security hardening for Microsoft RPC Netlogon protocol

As part of our ongoing commitment to security, we’re introducing a hardening change to the Microsoft RPC Netlogon protocol. This update strengthens access controls by blocking anonymous RPC requests that could previously be used to locate domain controllers. This change is not configurable and cannot be reverted via policy.
